Landscaping artificial turf

How do you understand the term landscape design? May I propose that for most of you it means the way to choose the right tree, flower or boulder for a particular place in the garden? And you know what - this is true. But what I want to tell you is that people often forget about such important aspect of the landscape like artificial turf. I have to admit that landscaping artificial turf often takes last places in the landscape design and is not the integral design element. I will try to describe to you three main (environmental, functional and design) benefits of turf use in landscaping.

In the world of today a lot of new low maintenance landscapes have appeared thus reducing artificial turf areas. Among them are the designs that could be described with terms xeriscaping, environmentally friendly landscaping, and sustainable landscaping. Such implying caused turf to earn an unfavorable reputation. And indeed, landscaping artificial turf demanded higher inputs (fertilizer, water, time, and pesticides). For your consideration - almost all golf homeowners spend on their turf much more money than on the other areas of the landscape. However, all positive aspects of artificial turf are usually neglected.

A lot of people try to avoid landscaping artificial turf or just reduce turf areas in their landscapes because they consider turf a high maintenance plant. But if properly used and maintained, artificial turf may provide lots environmental benefits. For example landscaping artificial turf reduces soil runoff and erosion, provides a cooling effect and reduces glare and even reduces noise. Artificial turf areas in the landscape design usually are considered large and wasteful because of the energy and the amount of time needed to maintain them. But we must not forget about lots of functional benefits in the landscape that turf may provide. It gives an ideal surface for sports fields and recreation areas, provides easily maintained surface, provides enhanced landscape management in different levels and minimizes possible injuries while spending time on the ground. Most often places in a landscape design that should be covered with the artificial turf are not identified at all on the plan. And that is the drawback of landscape designers. Remember, that landscaping artificial turf provides an attractive foreground to your landscape, adds some spaciousness to an area, defines landscape area space, connects the elements of landscape like pieces of puzzle, at the same time enforcing shapes of other landscape features and softening hard to treat places.

Now you see that if landscaping artificial turf is used effectively it may provide many environmental, functional and design benefits in the landscape. Remember that effective use fully depends on proper species and cultivar selection, appropriate match to landscape conditions (such as soils, water available, sunlight amount etc.), integration of artificial turf places from both form and function perspectives, and a clear maintenance level commitment. Rather than reduce or eliminate turf areas, try landscaping artificial turf to create a more aesthetically pleasing, functional and environmentally friendly landscape.
