Pool landscaping
If you feel that you do not have enough challenges or opportunities while landscaping than you should try to design a swimming pool are for the backyard. There are thousands of things that need to be taken in consideration. These are safety, privacy, beauty and convenience for example. Swimming pool landscaping is a great and interesting challenge, because so many factors come into play in this case. There is no doubt that pool landscaping areas should provide beauty. But if we will think about some practical considerations, then everything must be referred to the safety and convenience. And of course if you need your pool to offer some privacy, then you'll have to hide it from unauthorized eyes.
I guess that privacy of your leisure should be of prime concern. So your pool landscaping area will obviously include fences walls, trees in order to block the view of the site from outside. The second thing to consider should be the comfort. All this entertaining, swimming, sunbathing should be providing you as much comfort as possible (if organized properly of course). The third factor that should be thought about is safety. Like when the pool is not in use, it should have some kind of safety fence in order to keep away the children and animals from falling into it. The good lightening must be provided and the floor around the pool must not be slippery. If we are talking of convenience - then try to organize it so that all entertaining and showering stuff should be easily accessible. Plant the trees that drop minimum amount of leaves, but provide good shade (that is optional) around the pool.
So since you plan the landscaping of your pool area then keep four basic landscape goals in mind: unity, balance, variety, and proportion. Unity in a pool setting is achieved when everything looks as naturals as possible, like it belongs together. The main goal of balance is to make a pool setting pleasing. There is no doubt that your pool will be the unique focal point of your landscape design. Variety breaks up what could be monotonous unity. You should be able to provoke visitors' interest by combining textures, colors, and shapes both horizontally and vertically. Proportion refers to the same scaling rules between the various forms, materials, and open spaces of your landscape. Can something look worse than a small pool in a yard as flat and wide as a football field?
Another important thing in pool landscaping is to select surrounding plants properly. Try to keep their ultimate sizes and shapes in mind. Though a young plant may suit the proportion of your lot, within a few years it may grow so tall that the effect will be spoiled completely. Try to avoid fruit trees. First of all they are messy, and what is more - they do attract bees. And as beautiful as flowers are, be aware that they, too, can be bee-magnets. Even worse, plants with invasive root systems can damage a swimming pool over the years.
