Water landscapes
It is not a secret that various water landscapes are now one popular addition to home and backyard landscaping. Indeed the ponds could become a unique focal point for any garden if available in lots of different shapes and sizes. But water landscapes refer not only to the ponds themselves, but also to such additions like waterfalls or fountains that are aimed to enhance any project.
A lot of people think that creating water landscapes is quite difficult. Water gardens do look so exotic after all. But actually I would say that water gardening is much easier than trying to grow up something as common as roses. Of course there is a set of simple rules you should follow. They may seem a bit odd, because all that is related to the water landscapes has nothing in common with ordinary landscaping. So all you have to remember is that water landscapes need to maintain ecological balance. That is to have fish, aquatic plants, and water snails. Another thing to remember is that to keep water clean you have to provide the water surface with vegetation cover.
To start creating water landscape you should build the pond. Before starting the work make sure you have all materials and instruments that you may need. These are: digging tools (like wheelbarrow shovel), level, sharp and soft sand, paving, pond liners (these could be rubber or the hard shell), filters, pumps, and heater. When everything is found proceed with examining the area. First of all find the place for it. It should be placed at the lowest point in the yard and with mixed sun and shade. When the place is found and cleaned up - proceed with excavating. Dig out the center to full depth and then slope sides. The important thing to remember is to make sure that the area has no buried water or electrical lines. After excavation is finished try to line all the leveled horizontal surfaces with sand. The next step is landscaping the edges. For a formal edging which is also called coping you should set paving stones in a bed of mortar (it is about 3 parts of sand on 1 part of cement). If you want to achieve more natural look, than set the stones on the plant shelves. After that make sure, that stones are firmly set and will not shift if stood on. Do not lay stones atop the edge of a hard-shell liner. They may crack it. Thinking about the future additions you may incorporate two kinds of pipes: electrical and water ones. That would be very useful in case you want to add a pump for a fountain or water source at a future date. And the last thing to do is to populate your water landscape. Find as much literature as possible about aquatic plants and fish that suited for your pond.
Now, when your pond and therefore a water landscape is created remember that with the exception of several setup tasks that must be completed in spring, and winterizing tasks that must be completed by the end of fall, established water ladscapes can be taken care of with minimal maintenance.
